Board Of Directors Meeting Minutes

Thursday, April 13, 2017 11:30 a.m.-1:15p.m

The Yahara Lakes Association Board of Directors held its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, March 9,2017 in the Associated Bank (3002 Fish Hatchery Rd) Conference room.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DISCUSSION:

  • Brainstorms ideas to obtain information regarding why membership may not be growing

  • Brain storm ideas to grow membership

OPENING DISCUSSION: “WHY DID I BECOME A MEMBER?”

Board members thought it would be helpful to set the stage for the membership topic by discussing and membership how and why they became members of the association and/or the Board:

  • To learn more about the lakes: Zoning issues o DNR o Educate others

  • Political power of the group

    • Understand what you can and cannot do

    • Algae around the pier

    • Weeds/clean lakes

  • Other members recruit o YLA’s influence – “The Piers”

  • Source of knowledge

    • Lakes conference

    • Ability to influence lake issues

  • Simply responded to an email looking for leadership and wanted to be able to give back

  • Recruited by specific people/emails

    • Wanted to make a difference

    • Knowledge, experience of the members

    • Previous ‘controversy’

  • “Obligation” to be involved if live on the lake

OTHER KEY POINTS:

  • Issues are not ‘burning’ as they once were when membership was high

    • Zoning previously was a key issues

    • “Riparian rights”

    • Without an ‘issue’ membership may stay flat

    • Is there another good ‘reason’

  • Possible changes in policies coming soon

  • More responses to emails or requests for leadership when:

    • Solid information regarding lakes was shared out (example was ‘zoning’)

    • Previous members shared information regarding ‘water law’
